How to Correct Errors in Birth, Marriage, or School Certificates

By shagun , 12 August 2025

Errors and mistakes found in official certificates, such as wording mistakes of names, wrong dates, or missing details, create legal or administrative problems. In India, the corrections are done through the issuing authority:

  • Birth/Death Certificate → Apply to the local Municipal Corporation or Panchayat or Registrar of Births & Deaths.
  • Marriage Certificates → Go to the Marriage Registrar's office where the marriage is registered.
  • School Certificates → Contact the school, which will then put the same application forward to the relevant education board. Supporting documents like Aadhaar, PAN, passport, or old records are required. For big changes, a court order or affidavit may be required. As expected, delays are common, so applying well in advance is advisable.
