Purpose of this RTI Application Form

The RTI application form is used by citizens of India to request information from Public Authorities under the Right to Information Act, 2005.

Goal: To promote transparency and accountability in government functioning.

Citizens can obtain information about government records, decisions, policies, and data.

It ensures that public authorities are answerable to citizens.

Key points:

  • Only applicable to information held by public authorities.
  • The applicant should preferably submit it directly to the Public Information Officer (PIO) of the concerned department.
  • Fees apply for filing an RTI (varies by state and type of request).

When is this form used

You would use this form when you want:

  • Access to documents or records held by a public authority.
  • Inspection of government records (for example, land records, public contracts, court case status).
  • Information about decisions or policies affecting the public.
  • Data on government schemes, services, or expenditures.

Important Features of the Form

Part A – Contact Details: Ensures the PIO knows who is requesting the information and how to respond.

Part B – Details of Information Sought: Helps specify:

  • Whether the information concerns life & liberty (urgent cases).
  • Type of information: copy of document, inspection, sample, or other.
  • Third-party involvement: if the information affects someone else, their consent may be required.
  • Time period: define the timeframe for which information is needed.

BPL Category:

  • Citizens Below Poverty Line can file RTI without paying fees (proof required).

Fees:

  • Normally Rs. 10 for the application.
  • Additional charges may apply for copies or inspection.

FAQs about the RTI Application

Q1. Who can file an RTI?

Any citizen of India can file an RTI. Non-Indians cannot.

Q2. Can I file an RTI for someone else's information?

Yes, but if it concerns a third party, their consent may be needed.

Q3. How long does it take to get a reply?

30 days from the date of application. 48 hours if the information relates to life or liberty.

Q4. What if the PIO doesn't respond?

You can appeal to the First Appellate Authority of the department. Further appeal can be made to the Central/State Information Commission.

Q5. Can I ask for copies of documents?

Yes, and you may need to pay reasonable fees for photocopies.

Q6. Can RTI be used to know government expenses?

Absolutely. For example, fund allocation for public works, salaries, or procurement details.

Q7. Can the government refuse to give information?

Yes, under Sections 8 & 9 of the RTI Act, for reasons like national security, personal privacy of third parties, trade secrets or confidential information.

Q8. Can I submit this online?

Many departments allow online RTI filing via portals: https://rtionline.gov.in

Q9. Do I need a lawyer to file an RTI?

No. It's simple, self-service, and designed for citizens to use directly.

Q10. Can I track my RTI application?

Yes, using the acknowledgement number given by the PIO or online portal.
