Why this affidavit is used

This affidavit is needed when there is a time gap between:

  • Completion of one course and admission to the next (e.g., finished 12th in 2021, applying for graduation in 2023).
  • Completion of graduation and applying for post-graduation.
  • Leaving studies temporarily (due to work, health, family, or financial reasons) and later rejoining.

It's basically a formal declaration explaining why the student was not studying during the gap period.

When it is used

  • At the time of college or university admissions (UG, PG, and professional courses).
  • For competitive exam counselling (medical, engineering, law, government exams, etc.).
  • When applying for scholarships, visas, or government recruitments, if there's an unexplained education/employment gap.

Purpose

  • To justify the gap year in education or career.

Q1. Who issues a gap certificate?

It is not "issued" by a university. The student prepares an affidavit on stamp paper, signed before a Notary Public/First-Class Magistrate.

Q2. What documents are usually attached?

Previous marksheets, transfer certificate, ID proof (Aadhaar/PAN), and sometimes employment proof if the student worked.

Q3. What reasons are valid for a gap?

Employment, illness, family responsibilities, financial issues, preparing for competitive exams, travel, and personal reasons.

Q4. Is it compulsory everywhere?

Many universities (especially government and professional colleges) ask for it. Private institutions sometimes relax it.

Q5. Can false reasons be given?

Risky. If found false, admission/job can be cancelled and legal action may follow.
